This lithograph by René Gruau shows a stylized woman in a flowing black dress against a bold yellow background. Using minimal lines and strong contrasts, Gruau captures elegance and movement rather than realistic detail. Subtle touches like red lips and jewelry add a sense of luxury, typical of his iconic fashion illustrations.

René Gruau (1909–2004) was a renowned French-Italian fashion illustrator, celebrated for his bold, elegant, and highly stylized images that helped define mid-20th-century fashion imagery.

Born in Rimini as Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate, he began drawing at a young age and adopted the name René Gruau from his mother. He rose to prominence in the 1930s, creating illustrations for leading fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle.

Gruau is especially famous for his long collaboration with Christian Dior, for whom he created iconic advertising images that captured the elegance and drama of Dior’s designs. His work is characterized by minimal lines, striking use of color (especially red, black, and white), and a strong sense of movement and sophistication.

Beyond fashion editorials, Gruau also designed posters for theatre, film, and cabaret—most notably for the Moulin Rouge in Paris.

René Gruau remains one of the most influential illustrators in fashion history, known for shaping the visual language of luxury and elegance in the 20th century.
