Sjef Biessen was born in Heerlen to a musical family. His two brothers became flautists and pianists. There was always music in the parental home, but Biessen did not want to make music his life’s work. So he followed a technical education and went to work in mining.
In the meantime, Biessen also drew creditably, but not professionally. Until he suddenly suffered a fatal attack on his nervous system. He could no longer cope with his work and the medical staff rejected him. After this, Biessen focused entirely on his art.
Biessen worked mainly with graphics and painting. His art all has in common that they rely heavily on line construction. So the constructor he once was is still there. He made beautiful linear abstractions with themes such as music, flowers, people, and religious scenes.
Sjef Biessen has exhibited in several art museums in the Netherlands and Belgium.
