Portrait of a man

A very typical portrait by the hand of the Dutch artist Anton Martineau. What makes it so typical? Mostly the expressive style in which he depicts the man (or is it a self portrait?). Loose brushstrokes and thick layers of paint give the work a vibrant look. The faces he paints are always put on canvas as if a child has created them. Typical for the Cobra movement in that time.

Before Anton Martineau became an art painter, he worked as a decorator and house painter. Martineau was a visual artist and poet. He painted vital, violent figures in an emotional style with dramatic brushwork and forms that appear caricatural. His works can best be described as figurative expressionism.

Martineau lived and worked in Paris, The Hague and mainly Amsterdam. An artist of international stature, he had already exhibited in 1967 at the Stadler gallery in Paris. He belongs to a slightly younger generation than the Cobra painters, from whom he has consciously distanced himself.
His theme is mankind and its environment in all its nudity, painted in a masterly style with oil on canvas. With his work, he makes a strong contribution to the international ‘new figuration’.
