This painting by Wibbo Hartman depicts a calm riverside townscape, with a stone embankment curving along gently flowing water. Low buildings with warm, muted facades line the far bank, while soft greens and blues unify land, water, and sky. The loose, painterly brushwork and restrained palette give the scene a quiet, observational mood, focusing more on atmosphere and balance than on architectural detail.

Wibbo Hartman (1903–2003) was a Dutch painter who worked throughout much of the twentieth century and was primarily active in and around The Hague. He was known for his figurative approach, producing portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, most often in oil, with an emphasis on careful observation and balanced composition rather than radical experimentation.

Hartman was associated with the artistic milieu of The Hague and is sometimes linked to the circle of the Haagse Aquarellisten, reflecting his interest in both watercolor and painterly traditions. In 1932 he married the painter Josephine Bertha Elias (Joke Elias), and the couple lived and worked together for many years, later maintaining an atelier-home in Lunteren.

Although he never achieved broad international fame, Hartman’s work was respected within Dutch art circles and entered museum collections, including major institutions, securing him a modest but lasting place in the history of twentieth-century Dutch painting.
