Theo Mackaay (1950) has been a renowned Utrecht artist for more than 40 years with an international reputation. He has completed studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten.

Mackaay’s work is characterized by classical archetypes or recognizable forms, often of animals, warriors or women, which he transforms into deformed figures, thus transcending the realistic forms. Hence, his painting style can be described as deformed figurism.

This does not mean that he has not made realistic conventional sculptures. Mackaay is the creator of one of the most famous sculptures in The Netherlands: De Gouden Kalf of the Dutch Film Festival.

His classical training remains clearly visible in his work. Work that is currently also becoming increasingly monumental. Large works of Mackaay are exhibited in various cities in Europe.

Theo Mackaay is a well known painter, sculptor and graphic artist who works from his studios in the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Spain respectively. His colorful and impressive art can be found in many company and private collections.
