Henri Welter (1886-1948) was a sculptor and plasterer until his bankruptcy in 1912. Afterwards, he went into the art trade. He started as an art dealer from his home at de la Reykade 8 in The Hague. From 1931 to 1934, he had an art dealership at 770 Fahrenheitstraat, called ‘De Kring’.
From 1940 to 1948, he sold paintings from his home or from Café Schieland in Rotterdam. As a merchant, he sold paintings by appointment at clients’ homes, because from June 1940 the German occupiers had flattened the section of Fahrenheitstraat to build the Atlantic wall (Atlantic wall between Norway and Spain). This meant the end of the shop sale.
Henri dealt just like his 2 brothers in work by, among others, van Gilst, Jongsma, Aris Knikker, Henk Smallenberg, Jan Knikker, Cornelis de Bruin and Jan Knikker Jr. After their death, the signatures were placed by others, often on existing and unsigned work by other artists. Henri Welter sold many signed canvases but also many unsigned works that he himself signed under the name H. Endlich, his mother’s name.
