This still life shows that Braakensiek was a talented painter. The way the carpet is draped on the table and how the light from elsewhere in the room falls on the open book and the lute – it is of high quality and certainly very stylish. The picture is signed in lower left with red pencil, which is typical for Braakensiek. In good condition.

Amsterdam artist ‘Johan’ Coenraad Braakensiek (1858-1940) was a very popular and productive illustrator. Besides lithographs for books, he made many political cartoons for Dutch and foreign newspapers and magazines.

In 1886 he joined the magazine De Groene Amsterdammer, for which he produced a large and small drawing every week. Because of a congenital deafness he had difficulty learning, and was taken out of school at the age of 11 to become a patternmaker.

In 1873, his talent was noticed by the editor of the Algemeen Handelsblad, who allowed him to study at the Academy of Visual Arts. There he studied from 1876 to 1881 under August Allebé, Jan Baptist Tetar van Elven and Bernard Wijnveld.

Besides his many illustrations, Braakensiek also painted small genre pieces in a flowing and decorative style. This small still life shows how talented the artist
