Jan van Anrooy (1901-1988) was a Dutch Impressionist, who was especially inspired by the flat, Dutch landscape with its canals, flowering orchards, the beach and the sea. He liked to call himself a “Colorist”. Without mixing the colors beforehand, he often put his landscapes on the canvas through vigorous brushstrokes.

Van Anrooy changed his place of residence many times. Thus he lived and worked in Zaltbommel, Den Bosch, Zoutelande, Elst and The Hague and for longer periods of time in Deil in Gelderland near the river Linge. He also lived in South Africa. Not surprisingly, Jan also visited Paris in early 1930. In some of his works, Van Gogh’s style is clearly recognizable, also in the choice of color and light.

Life was not exactly easy and his drinking problem was around the corner early on. As a painter, a soldier and later as a captain in the anti-aircraft artillery, Jan managed to keep his family alive, time and again capturing on canvas the life experiences he gained anywhere and everywhere.

He was educated at the famous School for Art, Technology and Craft in Den Bosch under the guidance of painter Huib Luns. He learned to ‘admit color’ from Frans Oerder.

Van Anrooy is also considered the painter of the West Betuwe.

Jan van Anrooy’s work is in many museum, corporate and private collections.
