Pastel drawing on board of a farmer on a field in The Netherlands. A typical Dutch scene. Very vivid blue colour on coal and brown paper background. In good condition. Framed in a very heavy wooden frame with detailed ornaments. The glass in the frame is antique and shows the bubbles from the blown glass.

Cornelis Albert van Assendelft was born in 1870 in Middelburg, Zeeland and lived for some time in beautiful Veere. For this reason, it is sometimes said that he belonged to the “Veerists,” painters who lived and worked in Veere.

However, Van Assendelft moved frequently and had no fixed place of employment. He worked successively in The Hague, Bemmel, Groesbeek, Amstelveen and, beginning in 1932, in Amsterdam.

He became famous for painting and drawing the hard work of farmers and farm workers in the countryside. This work is very typical of his oeuvre.

His painting style is characterized by loosely juxtaposed colors in stripes or dots, the colorite of which was influenced by Van Gogh. Pastel chalk was his most favored medium. Also in choice of subject matter Assendelft’s work reminds us of his contemporary Van Gogh
