This etching is from the 1960s, the period in which Moonen made a name for himself as a subtle graphic artist who often experimented with special techniques. From the mid-1980s, painting and drawing became increasingly important in his oeuvre.
Speaking about his work, Moonen says: ‘It’s not about whether it’s good, but about how it gets there? I’m not sure about that: it comes into being. Your eyes have a lot to do.’
Werner Moonen (1940-2011) was born in Gent and came to Tilburg in 1949 to attend the predecessor of the Academy for Visual Education. He later studied in Paris and Oslo. Moonen is primarily known for his graphic work, but he is also a painter and sculptor.
In all his work, he uses an abstract style that he mixes with figurative-impressionist elements. In 1983, he made a steel facade sculpture for the Vissers Farm on the Berglandweg. From 1982 to 2000, Moonen was a teacher at the St. Joost Academy in Breda. There, he taught Marc Mulders, Reinoud van Vught and Rob Birza, among others. In 2000, Moonen received an honorary medal from the Tilburg Art Foundation for his dedication to Tilburg’s cultural heritage. He exhibited his work all over the world.
