Hendrik Gooijer (1941-2021) was a Dutch painter who worked in an expressive and abstract style with figurative elements. He applied large, heavy blobs of paint to a canvas that is covered with pieces of wood and other materials. This gives his works enormous depth and makes them seem so intense and overwhelming.
The painting is almost like a sculpture, so many elements are stuck to the canvas and with such thick brushstrokes the contours of several faces are indicated. Gooijer likes to work on large canvases on which he can express himself through painting, collage techniques and sculpting of the elements. By night, the canvas shows a completely different composition due to the relief of sculpted shapes applied to the canvas – hands, legs and figures arise telling a whole new story.
Also, Gooijer founded a gallery in Haarlem called Gooijer Fine Art. He specialized in abstract art. From 1983-1991 the gallery was located in the centre of Amsterdam, at Prinsengracht 510. In 1991, Gooijer decided to move his gallery to a former hunting residence with a sculpture garden in Doesburg. The gallery closed in 2007
