The artwork shows the tall tower of the Westerkerk, one of Amsterdam’s most famous churches. The church is surrounded by trees, and you can see people walking near a canal and bridge in the foreground. The details are carefully drawn, especially in the tower and the trees.

The sky is mostly empty, giving focus to the height and shape of the church tower. It’s a peaceful and classic view of this well-known spot in the city.

Brandenburg’s style is detailed but clear, capturing the quiet beauty of Amsterdam without being too flashy. This etching gives a nice, timeless feel of the Westerkerk and its surroundings.

Cornelis Brandenburg (1884-1954) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and mainly an etcher. He studied at the Teekenschool voor Kunstambachten in Amsterdam. After his education, he continued to work in Amsterdam as a plate painter at De Distel pottery.

After this, he concentrated entirely on etching, particularly of the city of Amsterdam, which he continued to do until his death. It is with these etchings that he eventually became famous.

Brandenburg was one of the most important etchers of Amsterdam’s canals. He was a member of Arti et Amicitae and made more than 100 etchings of beautiful Amsterdam. He died in his beloved Amsterdam in 1954.

In the 1950s, it is said that every household in Amsterdam had a Brandenburg hanging above the chimney. His works are a tribute to his beloved city. In particular his snow scenes of Amsterdam are from very high quality and popular among collectors.
