This oil on canvas painting is an abstract composition built from geometric shapes and soft, overlapping forms. The artist uses a muted pastel palette—light blues, yellows, greens, and warm earth tones—creating a calm, balanced atmosphere.

Within the abstraction, subtle suggestions of animals can be seen, as certain shapes and lines resemble figures or faces, inviting the viewer to interpret hidden imagery. Circular and angular elements intersect across the canvas, giving a sense of rhythm and movement, while the layered forms add depth.

Overall, the work focuses on harmony, color, and playful visual associations between abstraction and recognizable forms.

The painting is signed in lower right ‘WF Smit’, but I did not yet made a decision on the attribution. Presumably, the work is created by an artist who works under pseudonym or a contemporary artist that is less known in the art world. On the back is stated ‘W F Smits, born in The Hague, 1923’, but it is not yet confirmed that we are looking at a picture by the hand of Willem Frederik Smit (1923) as research shows that his work is mainly in figurative realistic style as opposed to the abstract and colourful piece that I have for sale. Therefore, an attribution to the artist would be too premature. I let the quality speak for itself.

A short biography of him:

W F Smit is a Dutch painter born on 19 March 1923 in The Hague. He trained formally at the Koninklijke Academie (Prinsessegracht) in The Hague and at the Vrije Academie, where he studied under teachers including Livinus van der Bunt. He also studied with Frans Volmer, focusing on flowers and still lifes, and with Eddie Rijf, who taught him about seascapes. Smit made several study trips abroad, notably to New York, where he also exhibited his work, and developed a classical yet personal approach to landscape and figurative subjects. His signed paintings include traditional Dutch landscapes and scenes of boats or harbors, often in oil on canvas. Smit’s work reflects a mid‑20th‑century European painterly tradition that combined observational realism with a quiet, everyday subject matter.
