Aat Veldhoen, born Arie Johannes Veldhoen on November 1, 1934, in Amsterdam, was a prominent Dutch painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. His artistic talent was evident from an early age, and he was encouraged by his father, who was also a painter. Although his father provided him with drawing and painting materials, he did not interfere with Aat’s artistic development, allowing him to explore his creativity freely.
At the age of just 14, Veldhoen was admitted to the prestigious Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he began his formal artistic training. However, after four years, he left the academy without completing the course to pursue his career as an independent artist. This decision marked the beginning of a prolific and influential career.
Veldhoen’s work quickly garnered praise from both the public and critics. From 1956 to 1958, he received the Subsidie voor de Vrije Schilderkunst (Subsidy for Free Painting) three times in a row, which was a testament to his exceptional talent and the high regard in which his work was held. Throughout his career, Veldhoen created an extensive body of graphic work, which included landscapes, still lifes, and more provocative subjects such as naked, copulating couples.
His innovative approach and willingness to explore a wide range of themes made him a significant figure in the Dutch art scene. Veldhoen’s work is characterized by its expressive quality and the boldness with which he tackled various subjects. He remained an influential and respected artist until his passing in 2018, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts.
